We are always eating yogurt that comes in these plastic containers that are not recyclable in Philadelphia because they are made of #5 plastic (polypropylene). I needed to make rigid domed bases for my feather fascinators and I invented this way of making bases from the containers. Here I will show you how to use some of the plastic from your empty yogurt container to make a domed base for your crafty crafting.
Step 1: Gather Supplies.
- 16 oz Yogurt Container(s)
- 3 inch paper circle
- Scissors
- Pliers
- Permanent Marker
- Stapler with Staples

Step 2: Trace Circles

You should be able to fit three 3-inch circles on a 16 ounce yogurt container.
Step 3: Cut out the Circles

Cut from the top of the container so that you end up with a solid ring from the bottom of the container. See the piece to the left of the three circle pieces.
Step 4: Cut Slits in Circle

Cut two slits in the container as shown. They should be opposite each other in the position shown.
Step 5: Overlap And Staple
On each side, overlap the plastic in either side of the slit you made. This should cause the circle to bend into a dome. You only need to overlap the plastic by about a quarter of an inch, but use your judgement. It’s not an exact science.
You will need to hold the plastic in place and use your stapler to secure it. I found the easiest way for me to do this is to the stapler on the floor and work it with my foot. Put a couple staples in per side. Use your pliers to flatten the staples.
You should end up with something like this:

Even it Out
Now your base has a domed shape but it will be curving a little too much in one direction. This is where we use the strip from the bottom of the container. take the strip and line the end up with the edge of your base as shown. The curve of the strip should be opposing the curve of the base. Staple the the strip onto the base.
Trim the excess strip from the base and save it for your other two bases. Then staple down each side of the strip so that it forces the base a little more flat. And that’s it. Your base is all set to be covered and made into a fascinator (or whatever else you want).

HOW FASCINATING!!!
Sorry, I’ve been itching to make that silly joke. But seriously, this is great! All the other tutorials I’ve seen just can’t get the same shape as this. I really want to be able to say I made the whole fascinator myself when I make them, and I have not seen fascinator bases at any of the local craft stores. I love yogurt, so I’ll have hundreds of fascinators in no time! lol
